Dead Register - Captive (album review)

From the opening strains, Dead Register's Captive (AVR Records) is completely captivating. The album is full of moving colours that drag you deep into the miasma of emotion. The title track 'Captive' is full of blues and purples. The tome is maudlin and the vocals eerie. M. Chvasta's vocals are like a knife thru your heart. Everything about the opening track brings you down, makes you sad. It's gut wrenching! Keep in mind, Dead Register is a three piece with M. Chvasta on vocals bass VI, and bass and Avril Che on keyboards, synthetic bass, piano bass, and vocals and the addition to Danny Ryann on percussion.

The sound of Captive is a great hearkening to the synth pop / new wave music of the 80s and early 90s - think Psychedelic Furs or Peter Murphy. The second track, 'Ender' is clear as a bell. There is a purity to the overall sound of the song. 'Heresy' is another fantastic song. There is a wonderful lose yourself in dance element to the song. It's full of black velvet walls and black lighting. M. Chvasta sings about feeling "...you drift away ... the silence is overwhelming..." The listener does drift, deeper and deeper into the song. Dead Register puts brings the forlorn feeling back to gothic music. The genre was designed to express despondent feelings through music. They do this perfectly. 'Blood from a Ghost' is a Dead and Gone cover. The walking bass line has a Patty Duke swagger. It's beat poetry in a smokey cafe Peggy Lee mod rendition that is poignant. 'Monochrome' has a heavy Tool vibe. It's got punches (strait to the gut).

Captive ends and it leaves you more maudlin than when you began listening to it. It's a downer. This means it's the perfect album! Buy it directly from the band at the link below. You will be sad that you did!
